Nature’s Discontent

farmers nurtured the land
reaping the bounty
the work was done by hand.

Then modern machinery arrived
and the wildlife fell away
farming became an industry
and something had to pay.

Tired barren fields
caused by farmers’ assumption
used and abused
for human consumption.

No longer fit for purpose
only memories still remain
a sprinkling of straw
where golden crops once did reign.

The ground is now fallow
long forgotten, unjustly spent
this is the winter
of nature’s discontent.
